Have you ever sat down with your Bible, your journal, and the best intentions… only to feel like heaven is quiet? You’re doing “all the right things.” You’re showing up. You’re reading a passage you’ve read before. You’re even trying to pray first thing in the morning. And yet, your mind is racing, your heart feels tired, and you’re left wondering, “Lord, are You still speaking to me?”

Let me gently reassure you: God is still speaking. He has not stopped. He has not turned His face away from you. The question usually isn’t whether God is speaking. The question is whether we’re asking the kinds of questions that posture our hearts to recognize His voice.

Small steps add up. And one small step that can change everything is this: shifting from “Why is nothing happening?” to “Lord, what are You saying right here?”

God’s Voice Has Not Gone Silent

There are seasons when God’s guidance feels immediate and clear, and there are seasons when it feels hidden—like trying to hear a whisper in a noisy room. If you’ve been through grief, church hurt, a busy caregiving season, a health challenge, or even just a long stretch of responsibility, it can feel harder to tune in.

But Scripture is steady when feelings are not. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). That is not a statement for super-spiritual people only. That is a promise for believers. If you belong to Him, you are not disqualified from hearing Him.

Sometimes we think hearing God has to look dramatic or mystical. More often, it looks like a steady nudge. A holy interruption. A verse that lingers. A conviction that brings you back to peace. A new thought that aligns with Scripture and produces life.

God often speaks in ways that match His character. He may correct you, but He will not crush you. He may lead you to repent, but He will not drown you in shame. His voice brings light, clarity, and the invitation to come closer.

Why We Struggle to Hear (Even When We Love God)

If you’ve ever thought, “My mind is all over the place,” you are not alone. Many of God's faithful struggle to focus in prayer because life has trained their nervous system to stay on alert. When you’ve spent years responding to everyone else’s needs, it’s hard to suddenly sit still and listen.

Sometimes we struggle because we carry spiritual fatigue. You can love God deeply and still feel dry. You can be consistent and still feel disconnected. You can read the Word daily and still wonder if you’re truly hearing.

Here are a few gentle reasons the voice of God can feel harder to discern:

First, hurry. When we rush into prayer like it’s one more task, we’re physically present but emotionally scattered. Second, noise. Noise can be literal (TV, phones, notifications) and internal (worry, replaying conversations, mental to-do lists). Third, fear. Fear often sounds like urgency and pressure, while God’s voice often sounds like invitation and peace. Fourth, disappointment. When life hasn’t turned out how you hoped, you might approach God guarded, asking questions that expect silence instead of expecting love.

Give yourself room to breathe. Allow yourself time to learn how to listen again.

The Power of Asking the Right Questions

Questions shape attention. They direct the heart. They help you notice what you’ve been overlooking. And when it comes to hearing God, the difference between a spiraling prayer time and a grounded prayer time is often the kind of question you bring into His presence.

For example, “Lord, why is my life so hard?” may be a sincere cry, but it can also keep your focus stuck in confusion. Meanwhile, “Lord, where are You meeting me in this?” opens your heart to presence, comfort, and perspective.

Jesus asked questions constantly. He wasn’t gathering information—He was inviting transformation. He asked, “Do you want to be healed?” (John 5:6). He asked, “Why are you afraid?” (Matthew 8:26). He asked, “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). His questions were doorways. They brought people out of autopilot and into truth.

When you learn to ask God the right questions, your quiet time becomes less about performance and more about relationship. It becomes doable today, even if you have five minutes and a busy house.

7 Questions That Help You Hear God (Without Overthinking)

These are not “perfect” questions. They’re practical questions. They help you slow down, invite the Holy Spirit to lead, and stay anchored in Scripture. You can use one question a day, or repeat the same one all week.

1. Lord, what are You inviting me into today?

Notice the word inviting. God’s voice is often an invitation, not an accusation. This question helps you shift from striving to receiving. It might be an invitation into rest, courage, forgiveness, or a simple next step of obedience.

2. What is one thing You want me to notice?

When your mind is scattered, “notice” is a gentle word. It pulls you into the present moment. God may highlight a pattern, a person you need to pray for, or a thought that needs to be brought under Christ.

3. What lie have I been agreeing with—and what is Your truth?

This is a powerful question if you’ve battled shame, fear, or feeling “not enough.” Many women carry lies like: “I’m behind,” “I’m too much,” “I missed my chance,” or “God is disappointed in me.” Bring that lie into the light, then ask God for His truth and confirm it with Scripture.

4. Where do You want to bring peace to my body and mind?

We often separate spiritual life from physical life, but God made you whole. If anxiety has been loud, ask God where His peace wants to settle. Sometimes the “answer” looks like a deep breath, relaxing your shoulders, or the permission to stop pushing.

5. What is one act of obedience that will honor You today?

Obedience doesn’t have to be complicated. It might be sending an encouraging text, choosing gentleness with your spouse, turning off the TV to go to bed on time, or finally having the conversation you’ve been avoiding with love and clarity.

6. Who needs prayer—and how do You want me to show up?

Many women are excellent at carrying others. This question helps you carry them with God, not instead of God. You might sense God prompting you to pray, to reach out, or to release what is not yours to fix.

7. Lord, what are You saying to me through Your Word right now?

This question keeps you anchored. Read a short passage and ask it slowly. If nothing “jumps off the page,” don’t panic. Sometimes the fruit of Scripture is not fireworks—it’s formation. Stay with it. God’s Word does not return void (Isaiah 55:11).

What If I’m Not Sure It’s God?

This is one of the most common concerns for faithful women who want to honor the Lord. Here are a few grounding filters:

God will never contradict Scripture. His voice leads you toward love, humility, and holiness. It may stretch you, but it will not manipulate you. It will not demand frantic urgency. The Holy Spirit convicts, but He also comforts. And God’s direction, over time, produces the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23).

If you’re unsure, pray it through slowly. Ask God for confirmation in His Word. Seek wise counsel from a mature believer. And give yourself grace—discernment grows with practice.

Sometimes God’s “answer” is not a sentence. Sometimes it’s peace. Sometimes it’s a clear next step. Sometimes it’s the strength to endure. Sometimes it’s a loving no.

And sometimes, the most powerful thing you hear is simply: “I’m with you.” Because He is.

When You Feel Spiritually Dry, Ask Better Questions (Not Harsher Ones)

If you’ve been tired, dry, or disconnected, I want to speak this over you with pastoral tenderness: do not punish yourself with harsh questions.

Questions like “What’s wrong with me?” and “Why can’t I get it together?” often fuel shame and shut down your spirit. Instead, try questions that create space for God’s kindness.

Try: “Lord, what do You want to restore in me?” Try: “What would it look like to receive Your love today?” Try: “Where have I been carrying burdens You never asked me to carry?”

Jesus is not standing over you with a clipboard. He is inviting you to abide. “Come to me, all who are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Rest is not the reward for finishing. Rest is the starting place for hearing.

A Simple Prayer to Pray Today

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are still speaking. Forgive me for the times I’ve approached You rushed, distracted, or guarded. Help me slow down and listen. Teach me to ask the questions that lead me into truth, peace, and obedience. Quiet the noise in my mind and settle my heart in Your presence. Holy Spirit, guide me today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
