Research on endocrine disruptors in products we use daily has been available for quite some time. But a new study conducted by the Silent Spring Institute confirmed that consumers who avoid products containing specific endocrine disruptors had significantly lower levels of the chemicals in their bodies.
“This study reinforces the real and immediate changes in the human body that can occur when you take safe and simple steps to prevent exposure to endocrine disruptors,” said Dr. Leonardo Trasande, a professor in the Department of Environmental Medicine at NYU Langone Health. “You can see immediate levels of endocrine disruptors in days. What is Bioaccumulation? Although products generally contain small amounts, when chemicals are used every day in common household & personal care items, in addition to being present in our food & atmosphere, our exposure adds up & creates imbalance and dis-ease in the body over time.
Because the body’s own hormones convey messages throughout the body in tiny amounts, deficient levels of chemicals, including many used in personal care products, may have serious effects on metabolism, reproductive development, and risks for later life disease.
Except in cases of accidental or occupational exposures, most exposures to chemicals occur at “shallow doses.” Most chemical safety studies look at the toxic effects of higher doses of chemicals and then assume decreasing toxicity with lower doses. Yet substances that disrupt the body’s own hormones — known as endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) — can exert important biological effects at low doses similar to people’s real-life exposures. These effects are often qualitatively different from those found in traditional toxicology testing. Source

Think through how many times are you applying some of these products? Daily? Multiple times a day? That is bioaccumulation in a real-life scenario.
